What My Book Means To Me…

Writing a book can be cathartic. Writing in itself can be therapeutic. People write for different reasons. Here are some of mine......

The image:

Laying gracefully in a hammock, pen thoughtfully resting on one’s bottom lip, rocking gently back and forth, notebook resting on one’s lap…

Is this the reality?

In a nutshell, no.

However, there are many reasons why we take to writing. Some of it is habit-forming from childhood. Some of us feel relieved when those words hit the page.

What has writing a book done for me?

Therapeutic reward

Writing those words is like having a conversation.

It feels like I’m letting go of the thought, the feeling, the anger, the elation, whatever it may be.

Talking directly to someone almost feels like it requires too much effort. Not to say that talking to a loved one doesn’t help. I have a few people who fit that category and I embrace their devotion and love enough to ‘want’ to share those thoughts with them.

Sometimes, it’s easier to write it down without speaking it.

The page is my receiver.

The paper is where I deliver my ‘speech’, although not spoken words, still thought-out, well-meaning, articulated sentences.

Cathartic

I have never used this word as much as I do now.

I get it.

I understand.

There’s something meaningful about telling someone, mostly a person you’ve never met, nor maybe ever get to meet, something about yourself which you may have never shared with anyone.

How meaningful is that?

It goes deep.

It burrows into my soul, my sub-conscious.

And the best part?

I find it so easy to do.

Preparing Mindset

Offloading my ‘brain’ thoughts is a relief.

It can set me up for a good day if my timing is right.

It makes me feel good about myself.

Therefore, my mindset is good for the rest of the day, and if I achieve anything else, that’s just a bonus.

Like today….

I have already written and posted an article on Substack, and now I’m writing this.

Sense of Self

Feeling good about myself is how I can move forward.

The book covers some traumatic events. Not written in an off-putting way, it didn’t make sense for me to do that.

I don’t want people to put the book down because they ‘can’t’ read it, because the trauma is too detailed. What would be the point in that?

There’s ‘just enough’ detail.

Take from it what you want to.

Hopefully it will resonate with someone in a similar situation.

That was the original point in writing it.

What else has it given to me?

A diagnosis, that’s what it has given.

Here are some of the articles I have written about it, to date, explaining my personal journey – the road to an ADHD diagnosis.

My name is Vanessa Pinnington, aka Nessie the Nomad, a solo female traveller who once struggled with confidence and social interactions. Travel has taught me that even the smallest steps—like saying hello—can open doors to new friendships and unexpected adventures. Through my blog (and forthcoming book), I hope to inspire others to embrace their quirks, find strength in the ‘little wins’, and discover that the world has more possibilities than we ever imagined. If I can do it, anyone can.
